2011 Ravines Wine Cellars Dry Riesling

Ah, Riesling, that darling of grapes which seems to point so clearly to its region of origin. I enjoy just about every expression of Riesling I find, yet there is no denying that Rieslings from France, Germany, California and New York are so clearly defined in style, it seems unfair to lump them all together as Riesling.

Unfortunately, a lot of cheap, sweet Riesling is in the market right now and I’m guessing that’s why it’s not more of a favorite with your average wine drinker. It’s unfortunate since good Riesling is a value and relatively affordable, not to mention a great wine to pair with food. Rieslings have accounted for some of the most delicious, complex, terroir-driven wines I have ever tasted.

Take tonight’s 2011 Ravines Dry Riesling. From the Finger Lakes region of New York. Ravines has a wonderful reputation for making high quality Riesling at an affordable price. The cool climate is very suited for the grape and while there isn’t the bracing acidity of Alsace or the richness and minerality of many German Rieslings, it’s very nice indeed, with apricot and a little petrol on the nose, pulled together and balanced with solid acidity. The fruit is well integrated and it would make a lovely pairing with so many foods it seems a no brainer. I’d take it over a Pinot Grigio any day.
